DIPG question????????????????????? - glioma more condition_symptoms uk
I am reading) a lot about DIPG (intrisnic diffuse pontine glioma, and you can learn more about the www.thecurestartsnow.org. I understand that there is a tumor in the deck area of your brain. Even cancer, which means that the tumor is cancer? I'm just a little confused. Some describe it as cancer and tumors, and it is a bit confusing for me. Can someone who knows more about cancer, to answer my question. I know a lot about this so far, but such a big part of it, I would like to know that I fully understand what it is.

What an eclectic blog you have here, Maryann!
I am very familiar with DIPG, as my son died as a result of the disease last year.
I tend to use the term "cancer" for it because it is not a solid mass of cells, although many people use the term "tumor" for it as well. (A tumor may or may not be cancerous, which means prone to spread or be malignant, or non-cancerous. A DIPG is cancerous. You can read some basic definitions for things like this at
www.cancer.gov.)
Glioma is a cancer that invades the glial cells (the connective tissue) in the brain. DIPG is cancer that invades the pons area of the brainstem -- our neuro-oncologist explained this as being like particles of sand (the cancer) in grass (the brainstem). There is no way to take the cancer out because it is completely infiltrated in the pons.
I hope this helps and is not too technical. As ou mentioned, The Cure Starts Now is a great resource for information regarding DIPG. I work with an organization called Just One More Day and we also have some helpful information on our website at www.JustOneMoreDay.org. JOMD is solely focused on DIPG and making a difference for children and families affected by it.
Thank you for your interest and your help in spreading awareness of this devastating disease that knows no boundaries.
Sincerely,
Kim Spady
